Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has been staging a protest by blocking the Shahbagh intersection in the capital, demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing of Dhaka University (DU) student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Samya. On Sunday (18 May) at around 4:00 pm, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal took position at the Shahbagh crossing, bringing vehicular movement in the area to a halt. Among those present at the sit-in were Chhatra Dal Central Committee President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, along with leaders and activists from Dhaka University, Dhaka Metropolitan units and other organisational wings. Earlier in the day, from around 12:30 pm, DU students held a similar protest programme in front of Shahbagh Police Station, pressing the same demand. On the night of 13 May, Shahriar Alam Samya was stabbed by a group of assailants in the Dhaka University area. He was rescued by his classmates in a bloodied condition around midnight and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead. Samya was a student of the 2018–19 academic session in the Department of International Relations at Dhaka University and served as the Literature and Publication Secretary of Chhatra Dal at F Rahman Hall. He resided in Room 222 of the hall. On the morning of 14 May, Samya’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station, naming 10 to 12 accused. Following the filing of the case, police arrested three individuals. They were sent to jail on 15 May, and the court granted six days of remand.
