A powerful earthquake was felt in Dhaka and various parts of Bangladesh on 21 November 2025. According to reports, the quake measured around 5.5 to 5.7 on the Richter scale (with the US Geological Survey recording it as 5.4–5.5 Mw, and local sources citing up to 5.7). The epicentre was near Madhabdi in Narsingdi district, roughly 30–40 km northeast of Dhaka, at a shallow depth of about 10 km. The shaking lasted around 26 seconds and was strongly felt across the capital, causing widespread panic—many residents rushed out onto the streets. Tragically, at least five people were killed (some reports mention up to 10), including incidents where building railings and debris collapsed in old Dhaka areas like Armanitola, striking pedestrians. Hundreds were injured (figures range from around 100 to over 450), with damage to buildings reported in Dhaka and nearby districts. Tremors were also felt in parts of eastern India, such as Kolkata. This was described as one of the strongest earthquakes felt in the region in recent years, highlighting Dhaka's vulnerability due to its dense population and mix of older, less resilient structures. Aftershocks followed, though no major tsunami risk was reported. Stay safe if you're in the area—hope everyone affected is okay.
