Book Lovers’ Day

On a pleasant afternoon in August, Book Lovers’ Day is celebrated. Stephen King once said, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” What a beautiful thought! A book is, after all, another world—one where a gentle light switches on in the hidden corners of the mind. These days, quiet spaces for reading in the city are hard to come by. Car horns, mobile notifications—where is that peace? And yet, the city of Kolkata never truly disappoints book lovers. From the narrow lanes of College Street to a secluded corner café on Park Street, somewhere or other you will always find a few people sitting silently, a book in hand, lost in their own worlds. These book cafés feel like modern-day learning halls. The steam from a cup of coffee blends with the scent of paper to create a strange, irresistible charm. Time seems to pause while reading there; fatigue is forgotten, and one thinks—this is life.
