As part of a significant advancement in global media technology, a new international standard led by China Media Group (CMG) was formally adopted on Friday. The standard will make video and audio broadcasting over 5G networks easier and more efficient. The new standard is called ITU-R BT.2550. It explains how broadcasters can use 5G technology to produce and share high-quality content. The standard was approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialised agency responsible for setting global communications standards. This is the sixth international broadcasting standard developed by CMG, defining how television and online video content should be produced, shared and presented at the highest quality. The concept for the new standard was first proposed in early 2024. It is based on China’s experience of broadcasting large-scale events using 5G and demonstrates how mobile networks can be used to produce television and online content more quickly and efficiently. During development, European experts proposed incorporating examples from their own 5G broadcasting projects. After joint development, the standard was approved earlier this year. Representatives from various countries welcomed the new standard, saying it would help broadcasters make full use of the speed and reliability of 5G technology. In addition, two more proposed international standards—one related to cloud-based media production and another to advanced video colour technology—are currently under review and are expected to be approved soon. These achievements demonstrate China’s growing role in setting global media standards in the era of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and ultra-high-definition video.
