The feature-length film Jaya Aar Sharmin has been made around the realities of the Covid period, loneliness, and the subtle nature of human relationships. The film was shot during the lockdown five years ago and, after a long wait, is set to be released on 16 May. Directed by Piplu R Khan, the film stars Jaya Ahsan and theatre actress Mohsina Akhtar in the two central roles. One is an established actress, the other her assistant. The story revolves around being forced to live together during the pandemic, the gradual development of their relationship, and the class-based complexities that emerge within it. Jaya Ahsan said, “Some stories take time to find the right moment. This film is one such story, captured at a time when the world had come to a standstill.” Speaking about the story, she added, “The film reflects unspoken human emotions. Monotony, fear, and at the same time a hidden sense of comfort—all of these are present in it.” Although it was initially planned as a short film, it became a full-length feature after just 15 days of shooting. The filmmakers completed the shoot in a small flat in Dhaka with a limited crew, strictly following health guidelines. Director Piplu R Khan said, “Through this film, we wanted to show how relationships change in times of crisis, and how new meanings of dependence and humanity emerge.” Actress Mohsina Akhtar said, “Working with Jaya apa was a wonderful experience. We all became like a family under one roof. This is a film I will remember for the rest of my life.” Jaya Aar Sharmin is not just the story of two women; it is an emotional portrayal of loneliness during the Covid era, social divisions, and the search for connection—something the filmmakers hope will touch the hearts of today’s audiences.
