A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 struck the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete on Wednesday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), Express Tribune reported. GFZ said the quake occurred at a depth of 83 kilometres (52 miles). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a similar event, saying a magnitude-6.0 earthquake was recorded about 10 miles south of the small Greek town of Fry and roughly 70 miles east of Agios Nikolaos in Crete. The earthquake struck shortly before 2:00 am local time, with tremors felt across the eastern Mediterranean. Despite the strong magnitude, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Greece. However, Greece’s Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued a precautionary tsunami warning, urging coastal residents to remain alert and to temporarily avoid seaside areas. A strong earthquake was also reported in Egypt. The country’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said a magnitude-6.4 earthquake was recorded 431 kilometres off the Egyptian coast. No casualties or property damage were reported. The eastern Mediterranean remains a seismically active region, and authorities in both Greece and Egypt are continuing to monitor for aftershocks.
